This $42 million, 80,000 sq. ft. adaptive reuse renovation project was completed in 2016. Originally constructed in 1925 as one of the first intermediate schools in the United States, the building is listed as a Tacoma historic landmark. The 3-story school underwent renovation and modernization to offer innovative learning solutions in a beloved historic building. The K-5 school primarily serves transient and homeless students, resulting in student turnover of around 115 percent annually (total enrollment approximately 450 students). The renovated facility is a place where they can truly feel a sense of belonging and ownership. The spaces for congregating, eating and learning support a progressive curriculum, including components such as gardening and fresh food preparation, shared learning spaces, and the community-focused “McCarver Square”

Our Role

BRC provided design for architectural acoustics, mechanical system noise control, audiovisual systems, and environmental noise assessment for this adaptive reuse elementary school. Acoustical challenges included vertical sound isolation between the gymnasium directly above noise-sensitive spaces, the incorporation of acoustical materials into an historic space, and acoustical design for the multi-use “McCarver Square”, which serves as library, performance venue and collaborative project space among other opportunities. BRC provided specified room acoustical treatments and sound isolation for the classrooms, offices, cafeteria/commons “Messy Hall”, gymnasium, library/media McCarver Square, and the Da Vinci Room, a place for making things, exploring science, and creating art. BRC also provided design for sound reinforcement, AV, and multimedia systems throughout the facility.
